Next generation high-speed mobile broadband
Trials underway of mobile broadband offering from 21Mbps up to 42Mbps
Vodafone have announced technical trials of a new mobile broadband technology offering speeds of between 21Mbps and 42Mbps on their network in Spain. This compares well with the current top speed of around 7Mbps available with the current state of the art 3G modems in the UK.
The new technology, referred to as 64QAM HSPDA+ is expected to provide "real world" data throughput of 13Mbps in good conditions for mobile video communications.
64QAM HSPDA+ is currently being deployed and should be in service in Singapore and Spain during the first half of 2009.
Future develpments towards even faster speeds are based on "3GPP LTE", a propesed new standard due to be officially ratified in March or April 2009. 3GPP LTE promises even higher speeds in exces of 326Mbps using mobile networks and equipment is already in development at major manufacturers.
