Mifi 3G Mobile Wifi - What it is and How to Use it...

Mifi or "Mobile Wifi" is a generic term used to describe one of a number of ways of sharing a mobile 3G Data connection with one or more devices.

In general, a Mifi device is usually meant to describe a small battery powered wireless "hot spot" with it's own 3G Sim and Wireless access point that can be taken anywhere required and used to provide Internet access where there is no existing or usable wireless connection.

This can be of use in the following situations, for example:

• At a hotel with no Internet access - or expensive or restricted access
• When at a Business or Home location with either restricted or no Internet access
• When in poor signal locations, when the Mifi device can be located in the best location, where it may be difficult to use a laptop, for example
• Where simple Internet access is required without reconfiguring wireless and network settings
• When travelling abroad, subject to a suitable Sim for the country or International Sim card

Mifi Devices are usually purchased as "Unlocked" devices, meaning any providers Sim can be used in any country.  Do check that a device is unlocked before purchase unless you know you will never need to use a different operator.  The ability to use different Sims is very useful - especially when travelling abroad or in locations where one provider has poor signal coverage.

Mifi devices usually support at least 5 connected devices - and sometimes many more, so you can connect laptops, tablet devices and even iPods with a simple Wifi connection to the Internet wherever you are, as long as the Mifi device has a mobile data connection.

No reconfiguration on the move

Once all your devices are configured to use the Mifi devices Wifi connection (which can be done before travelling) the devices will connect wirelessly to the Mifi device quickly and easily.  This is much preferable to having to change and experiment with wireless settings to connect to "unknown" networks which may have restrictions or charges in place.

One data plan for all devices

A single data Sim provides connectivity for all your devices at the same time - and if you are abroad or need to use a different Sim, it works for all your devices straight away.

Even iPhone users can benefit from a Mifi device if roaming abroad.  By disabling data roaming (usually very expensive) and connecting to a Mifi with a local Sim with Wifi, email can be used on the iPhone as usual - and iMessage will also use the Mifi data connection to other iPhone / iPad users as well.

Sharing a Mifi Device

As a Mifi device is an "extra" way of getting an Internet connection, it can be shared among people who need occasional Internet access when away - for example in a business, one or two mifi devices could be shared between a number of employees, or at home, a single Mifi device would enable Internet access when out and about - or at a remote location such as a holiday home or caravan.

Buying and Owning a Mifi Device
